William Coley stood helplessly beside Elizabeth “Bessie” Dashiell’s hospital bed when she died on January 23, 1891. When he began treating 17-year-old Bessie four months earlier, he had just completed his surgical internship under two prominent surgeons (William T. Bull and Robert F. Weir) at New York Hospital and had already shown great promise as a surgeon himself.
