An interview with three distinguished members of ASPET about the society, and how it helped them navigate their careers. As our field adapts to new technologies, unpredictable federal policies, and evolving academic structures, ASPET must similarly adapt to best serve our members. As these three interviews with distinguished ASPET members makes clear, change is something that every scientist must expect, and membership in ASPET can be an invaluable aid in both developing career paths and furthering research.
What is the value of going to a scientific meeting? There has been a lot of press recently about how scientists are cutting back on traveling to meetings and conferences. Many scientists have had grants canceled by the current administration, and/or funding delayed by the recent disruptions to normal government function. In response, some scientists are deciding not to travel, with attendance at a number of recent scientific meetings being noticeably lower than in previous years.
ASPET Executive Officer Dave Jackson shares how this issue’s cover story illustrates the ways membership in ASPET can help scientists throughout their careers, as well as the importance of attending ASPET 2026 in Minneapolis. He also discusses how membership in ASPET supports scientists, through grants, community, publication opportunities, networking, and more.

A showcase of early-career scientists—what drives them and why pharmacology is important to them.
The 38th Annual Meeting of the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET-GLC) was held at Northwestern University in Chicago on June 13, 2025. One hundred and seventy pharmacologists, biologists, computer scientists, chemists, clinicians, and students from both academia and the pharmaceutical industry in the Midwest were in attendance. To our knowledge, this was the highest meeting attendance ever at a GLC Annual Meeting, topping the previous high of 166 from 2024. Twenty-eight ASPET members attended, and an additional six attendees joined ASPET subsequent to the meeting.
