The National Academy of Medicine Welcomes Two ASPET Members

ASPET congratulates Drs. Deanna L. Kroetz and Stephen F. Traynelis on their elections to the 2025 class of the National Academy of Medicine!

Deanna L. Kroetz, PhDDeanna L. Kroetz, PhD, is a dean and professor in the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University. She is recognized for her exemplary contributions in translational pharmacology, which include defining functional impact of genetic variation in selected ABC family drug transporters. She has applied genomic approaches for discovery of molecular mechanisms of drug response and toxicity and developing human iPSC models of drug neurotoxicity, and provided exceptional mentorship and academic leadership.

Dr. Kroetz joined ASPET in February of 2008, and served on the Drug Metabolism and Disposition Editorial Board from 2001 through 2005.

Stephen Francis Traynelis, PhDStephen F. Traynelis, PhD, is a professor and dean’s eminent scholar in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University School of Medicine. He is recognized for his leadership in glutamate receptor biology. He elucidated new molecular and structural principles of ligand-gated ion channel function and their regulation by endogenous modulators. He developed first-in-class allosteric modulators of glutamate receptors and advanced our mechanistic understanding of synaptic transmission, epilepsy, neuroinflammation, and ion channel-related genetic disorders.

Dr. Traynelis joined ASPET in February of 1997, and served on both the Publications Committee and on Molecular Pharmacology’s Editorial Board from 2012 through 2016. In 2020, he was selected as an ASPET Fellow.

“Proposed U.S. research and development cuts startle young scientists like me.”

Dr. Elijah Z. UllmanDr. Elijah Z. Ullman recently published an op-ed in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution lamenting the science funding cuts by the current administration, and their potential impact on scientific progress. “The President’s proposed science budget cuts of 50%,” Dr. Ullman wrote, “are a fantastic way to ensure the next major advance is not developed here.”

Dr. Ullman is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University, a former ASPET Washington Fellow, and current member of the Science Policy Committee.

Louis Ignarro, PhD, Highlighted in The Washington Post

Louis Ignarro, PhDIn the recent article, “Trump slashed funding for universities that helped create these vital drugs,” The Washington Post examined the history of six important drugs invented over the past few decades, including the work of ASPET member Louis Ignarro, PhD:

“In the 1980s, Louis Ignarro, a pharmacology professor now at UCLA, became interested in nitric oxide, an air pollutant that could dilate blood vessels. At the time, he was on the fringes of his field. “I pursued that much to the dismay of my colleagues, who thought I was crazy,” Ignarro recalled.

Ignarro’s primary interest was the cardiovascular effects of nitric oxide. But in 1992, he discovered the compound also played a key role in male sexual function. Pfizer had been originally developing a heart drug, but in 1998, Viagra was approved instead for erectile dysfunction. Ignarro shared the Nobel Prize that year for his work on nitric oxide.”

Dr. Ignarro is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UCLA School of Medicine – Pharmacology, as well as a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board. He has been inducted into both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the founder of the Nitric Oxide Society and the society’s journal, Nitric Oxide Biology and Chemistry. Dr. Ignarro has been a member of ASPET since 1971.
