Donald E. McMillan, PhD
(1937–2025)
Donald E. McMillan, PhD was born in Butler, PA on Sept. 23, 1937. Upon completion of his PhD in Experimental Psychology, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Laboratory of Psychobiology in the Department of Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. In 1967 he moved to Downstate Medical Center, SUNY and 2 yrs later he moved to the Department of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina rising to the rank of Full Professor. In 1978 he accepted the position as Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, AR. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2007.
Dr. McMillan published over 230 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on the effects of drugs of abuse and neurotoxins on the behavior of laboratory animals. He served on numerous scientific review panels for government agencies including NIH, NIMH, NIDA, NIEHS, EPA and the Veteran’s Administration. In 1993 Dr. McMillan started the Substance Abuse Treatment Clinic at the UAMS and was the first basic scientist to direct a clinical treatment center in the history of UAMS. He was a member of many scientific societies and on the Editorial Board of many scientific journals. Dr. McMillan died in Seattle, WA on May 7, 2025, following a stroke.
